LAKE PLACID - A Lake Placid man remained in jail today on a $110,000 bond after his arrest for reportedly battering a man outside of a liquor store.
Thomas Albert Brown, 57, of 109 Anderson St., Lake Placid, was arrested Wednesday and charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and two counts of possession of a weapon or ammo by a New York state felon.
Highlands County deputies were flagged down by Highway Park Liquors customers to assist a man that was found knelt down between two vehicles and bleeding from the head.
The victim said he had been "pistol whipped" by a person known as "Tom," according to the arrest report.
A witness told authorities she did not see the incident, but did see the suspect walking away, with a small, silver revolver handgun in his right hand. She added that Brown allegedly said, "I should have shot him."
Brown's account was that he went to the store and was approached by the victim, who asked him for a couple of dollars, the report stated. The defendant said the other person had a knife and brought it up in a "threatening manner," causing Brown to grab his arm and take the victim to the ground.
The suspect told deputies the two were wrestling on the ground and the victim hit his head on a pole and the pavement, which caused the injuries. Brown also denied having a handgun, and that the only weapon he has is a shotgun.
A search of Brown's home reportedly revealed a Western Field 12-gauge shotgun, as well as a loaded silver .38-caliber revolver with blood on the barrel and a .22-caliber handgun, the report stated.
Brown said if there was any blood on the handgun, it was his own.
A check reportedly revealed that Brown was in jail in New York in 1976 for three to six years for robbery and possession of stolen property.
HCSO Deputy Jared Futch made the arrest.
