LAKE WALES - Bouncing back with a vengeance.

That's what the South Florida Community College softball team did by sweeping a doubleheader in the Warner University Invitational tournament on Saturday.

The Panthers beat Hillsborough CC by a score of 5-1 in the first game and then blasted Pasco-Hernando 12-0 in the second game.

"We played really well," said SFCC coach Carlos Falla. "I'm real happy with our effort because pretty much everybody swung the bat well."

Right-hander Kendra Wellnitz picked up the win in the first game, while right-hander Breanna Beckel earned the win in the second game.

"Kendra pitched well into the sixth inning," said Falla. "Breanna looked good and we did a good job of throwing strikes and playing defense."

The victory evened the Panthers record at 5-5 with their next game at home on Tuesday against Brevard.

First pitch for the doubleheader is at 5 p.m.

"We have a couple more weeks before we get into our conference games," said Falla. "We're playing better, but we have a ways to go.

"The light is starting to come on for some of the girls and we just need to keep working hard to get better."

SFCC BASEBALL

AVON PARK - South Florida Community College sophomore catcher Jerry Neufang hit a walk-off two-run homer in the bottom of the 17th inning to give the Panthers a 6-4 win over Lake Sumter CC on Friday night.

Austin Gaines tossed six innings of relief to pick up the win, which improved SFCC to 5-0 on the season.

"We didn't play great, but we hung around and grinded it out," said Panther coach Rick Hitt. "It was a great game to win."

CLEARWATER - Clearwater Christian College edged SFCC 9-8 in the first game before the Panthers rallied to win the nightcap 8-0 on Saturday.

The loss knocks SFCC out of the ranks of the unbeaten, as the Panthers' record is now 6-1.

South Florida is back in action with an away game at Webber University in Babson Park at 6 p.m. today.
