Great Band

Published: February 9, 2009

What a wonderful experience we had last month at the Sebring Civic Center, listening and dancing to the Highlandaires, the local big band group.

It was sad, however, to see the lack of people who showed up to support this amazing group. I cannot understand how a group of this caliber is not drawing crowds at each and every performance.

To see eight musicians in concert and the talent of these Highlands County musicians go un-noticed is unbelievable to say the least.

We sat and listened to music by some of the greats, such as Glenn Miller, Frank Sinatra and others and were so impressed by the sound of real instruments being played, such as saxophone, trumpets, trombone and more, along with great vocals.

The trip back to the '40s and '50s brought such wonderful memories to all of us. Lest the younger generation think that they would not enjoy this art form, we also heard from today's contemporary artists such as Natalie Cole.

It seems as if live music is dying out and I hate to see this happen. Please everyone, their next performance is on Feb. 19 at the Sebring Civic Center.

Please support this endeavor and keep live music alive here in Highlands County. You won't be disappointed and will have a chance to hear incredible musicians and music as it was intended to be.

Parents support the arts and treat your children to a real band and bring them along. It's sad that so many of our kids will never have a chance to hear live music when it's here for the taking right here in Highlands County.
