FHP Talks Telephone Fundraising Concerns

TALLAHASSEE - The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) has been dealing with a rash of phone calls about telephone fundraising from organizations that claim to represent the patrol.

"The people hear the word trooper and they think it's the (FHP)," said Capt. Mark Welch.

Welch could not speculate as to why people are receiving these calls, nor could he say if the recent rash was in any way connected to the country's economic downturn.

"It's sporadic," he said. "There's peaks and valleys."

According to an FHP press release, legitimate fraternal organizations operate in Florida and do lawful fundraising activities.

"The FHP does not endorse fundraising made on behalf of its troopers nor does it seek donations," the release stated. "Law and department policy prohibit troopers from requesting donations. The state of Florida covers troopers' salaries, benefits and equipment."

If residents receive such a call and question the legitimacy, they should ask the caller to mail literature to establish the credibility of the organization.

Anyone who feels they have been contacted by an illegitimate organization can lodge a complaint directly with the FHP or call the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services' consumer hotline toll free at (800) HELP-FLA (435-7352).
