Bush's recent presidency brings up an important question. Why do people having the best of intentions make mistakes?
I'm sure Bush doesn't have a mean bone in his body, but he has made serious mistakes in judgment throughout his life. Giving up alcohol was his greatest achievement. But it didn't make him either wise or saintly.
We all make mistakes in judgment. I believe this is because our negative fearful and angry reactions are not to be trusted.
They make us believe we are doing the right thing, but in reality they are the cause of most of our deep-seated personal problems as well as our relationship problems. They also keep us in the dark as to the truth of our own actions. Killing the messenger has yet to go out of style.
Is our own house built on love, reason and trust, or their opposites -- anger, irrationality and fear? If the latter, our house is built on sand and we know not what we do.
Rush Limbaugh recently passed a comment that reveals his anger, irrationality and fear of Barack Obama. Shortly before the inauguration he said, "I hope he fails."
I'm sure Limbaugh believes he is working for just causes, but in the long run his hatred and anger is sure to make him more enemies than supporters. The two sides must work things out if we are to make any progress at all.
As Leonard Pitts tells us, (What Limbaugh Comment Says about Limbaugh, Jan. 29,) "Barack Obama was elected in large part on a promise to carry the nation past anger; Limbaugh's side seems angry in power and angry out; it's as if anger is all they really have. The country doesn't matter, the "side" does. The irony is that his side would have you believe they are the bedrock defenders of this country, that they love it more than the rest of us, more than anything; its not the country they love, it's the (media) attention."
Leonard Pitts Jr. is a nationally syndicated columnist and winner of the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for commentary. He is also a courageous truth teller. He has received many death threats for speaking out against prejudice, hatred and anger. What his enemies seek to do is kill the messenger.
