LAKE PLACID - Highlands Independent Bank is offering a reward of $1,000 to anyone with information leading to the arrest of two people who attempted to break into the ATM at the Lake Placid branch on Jan. 29.
According to a press release from the Lake Placid Police Department, video from the ATM shows two people with "their heads wrapped with dark material" approach the machine sometime after midnight with hand tools.
The people left and returned several times – each time bringing another tool to the machine. Once they determined they could not gain entry with conventional hand tools, they used a backhoe from a local construction site.
One person can be seen directing the other as they approach the machine, the press release said. The backhoe driver made two attempts at removing the front cover of the ATM.
They did remove the cover, but could not get into the vault inside.
Those who might have information should call Lt. James Fansler at 699-3757
