AVON PARK - Hundreds of ticket holders came to the South Florida Community College's gymnasium Wednesday evening to see The Dallas Brass, as part of the college's Artist Series of performances for this season.
Along with The Dallas Brass' performance, the group was joined for a Christmas medley by some of the top high school musicians in the region. Student musicians from Avon Park, Sebring, Lake Placid and DeSoto County took the stage for Wednesday evening's performance.
The Dallas Brass, a nationally recognized group of musicians, performed songs of all kinds, from seasonal to classical to jazz and pop. The group received two standing ovations, including one for the medley played with the high school students.
The SFCC gymnasium has been temporarily transformed into a top performance venue while the auditorium is being renovated. Doug Andrews, dean of cultural programs, said stage lighting, the sound system and curtains have been moved to the gymnasium to create the proper ambiance.
Other stage curtains were rented and hundreds of chairs were purchased to provide plenty of seating. Andrews said the chairs will be used in classrooms once the new auditorium re-opens. Much nicer risers were purchased to provide a quality stage for performances.
The gymnasium seats 1,268 and will be used for 11 shows this season. Five Artist Series and six matinees will be held there.
