Offshore drilling

Published: August 22, 2009

The outrage to offshore drilling stems from the risk of pollution to the pristine beaches of Florida and its ruination of tourism. Senators Nelson, Martinez and ex-Governor Bush must compare it to a Chernobyl nuclear meltdown.

There is never any outcry from them regarding the daily, weekly, monthly closings of those same beaches to tourists from sewage-laden bacteria seeping into the beach areas.

The Valdez spill affected plants and animals but was not life threatening to humans. Sewage bacteria are life threatening to humans. Oil spills are one every 40-plus years; bacteria closing of a beach is a regular posting in a newspaper. Perhaps oil revenues from offshore drilling would allow government the means to stop sewage leaks and pollution before it infects tourism.
