Highlands Today will never be the same. For that matter, neither will Sebring and Lake Placid. On Aug. 1, one of Highlands Today's most prolific letter writers passed away after a long drawn out battle with leukemia. He put up one heck of a fight while maintaining a positive outlook.
Darrel Johnston, along with wife Kay founded the Outback USA, was a man of strong opinions which were well thought out, well written and usually right on target. His level of personal integrity was most admirable. Like him or not, one always knew where they stood with Darrel.
Many people were touched by Darrel via his business, love of golf, fishing, motorcycle riding and music. He was the drummer for the Southern Ridge Band for close to 10 years.
I would like to bid one of the most colorful letter writers a public goodbye and hope one day to meet up on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge. Farewell fellow band mate, fellow motorcycle enthusiast, lover of the outdoors and friend. Many will miss your letters, many will miss you.
