ST. PETERSBURG - Austin Gaines hit a solo home run and Tom Sicking had an RBI triple on Thursday, but St. Petersburg College took advantage of three costly Panther errors to steal a 7-2 victory from South Florida Community College in Suncoast Conference baseball action.
Sebring alumnus Chaz Abeln went 5.1 innings and gave up all seven runs, though five were earned.
"I threw the ball OK," Abeln said. "But we fell behind early and I hit four batters. We just couldn't put anything together against the St. Pete pitching."
With six games left in the regular season, the Panthers are still in the playoff hunt, though they'll likely need to win the majority down the stretch to have any shot at seeing the postseason.
"We control our own fate," Abeln said. "We have six games left, and if we win our share, we're in. We just have to quit making errors."
The Panthers hosted Polk CC on Saturday (see Monday's Highlands Today for complete coverage, including photos and reaction. They travel to Winter Haven to face Polk again on Monday and then have home-and-homes with Manatee (Wednesday at Bradenton, Friday at Panther Field) and Hillsborough (April 18 at Tampa and April 20 at Panther Field).
