Avon Park Publix to close May 2

AVON PARK - The Publix store in Avon Park will be closing May 2.
Maria Brous, spokeswoman for the Lakeland-based grocery chain, said Friday that store employees were notified Thursday.
Brous said the Publix store on the north side of Sebring that was formerly Albertsons is 4 1/2 miles from the Avon Park store and was attracting customers from Avon Park.
"It doesn't make sense to have two locations so close together," Brous said.
There are 80 full-time and part-time employees at the Avon Park store, according to Brous. She said all the employees will be given an opportunity to work at other stores.
The store opened in March 1987, Brous said.
