I find myself actually agreeing wholeheartedly with a letter by Gabriel Read. Read wrote to encourage your readers to fill in the void taken up by our snowbirds. His emphasis was volunteerism; something of a shock because I would have expected his answer to be more government involved.
Congratulations Mr. Read, volunteers are the backbone of many services provided in Highlands County. We take care of our own. Adding to that thought, please remember that if you have the money to go out to eat, please spend it with our local restaurants. There are some great local restaurants downtown and on the highway.
Likewise there are a number of local shops, clothing stores and other vendors locally owned. Some of the national brands even have local franchises. To make it easier I would suggest that these locally owned vendors advertise that fact.
In short, volunteer here and keep your money here. Don't send your money away to Bentonville, Ark., or New York City.
