AVON PARK - A 20-month-old girl, who authorities believe was injured while in the care of an Avon Park police officer, remains hospitalized in very critical condition Wednesday, according to the Highlands County Sheriff's Office.

"Our detectives are still actively pursuing all leads in the investigation and we have not been advised of any change in the victim's condition," Sheriff's Major Mark Schrader said Wednesday.

Wednesday, James Hilton Parker III, 32, of Sebring, did not bond out of Highlands County Jail. A $250,000 bond has been set and Parker faces charges of aggravated child abuse, a first-degree felony.

Highlands Regional Medical Center notified the sheriff's office early Sunday morning about a toddler with multiple bruises on her body and an apparent skull fracture.

The child was being supervised by Parker, who is the mother's live-in boyfriend, while she was at work, according to the sheriff's office.
