Published: September 24, 2008

FORT MEADE - Sierra Weaver had nine kills, 14 digs and two blocks to help Lake Placid shrug off a slow start and sweep Fort Meade 25-16, 25-23, 25-11 on Monday.

"The girls started really flat tonight," said LP head coach Marilyn Jones. "I'm not sure if this was just the case of the Mondays, but we had trouble getting passes to the setter tonight. The girls worked through it and did enough to win and that got us back on track.

"Sierra really kept us motivated tonight."

Kayla Summerfield finished with nine kills and eight digs, and Tiffany Bisby had six kills to go along with Kaneisha Hamilton's five kills and 12 digs, while Julie Shrewsbury went 14 for 14 on serves with two aces to lift the Green Dragons to a win.

The Dragons battled county rival Sebring on Tuesday night. See Thursday's Highlands Today for complete coverage.

Lake Placid returns to action at 7 p.m. Thursday when they host Frostproof.

GIRLS GOLF: Avon Park Stays Perfect

BOWLING GREEN - Junior Paige Moffat fired a 46 and the Avon Park girls golf team carded its best team score of an undefeated season at Torrey Oaks golf course.

The Red Devils (7-0) fired a 207 to edge out DeSoto (219) and Hardee (250). Lake Placid also participated in the tourney, but the Dragons fielded just three players and did not have a team score.

Sophomore Angela Bateman shot a 52, senior Courtney Robinson had a 54 and sophomore Sarah Hunnicutt rounded out the Devils' scores with a 55 on the front nine of Torrey Oaks.

"I'm very impressed that the girls were able to keep it together, even though we had a 20-minute rain delay," said Avon Park coach Suzie Gentry. "They're off to a good start."

The Devils return to action at 4 p.m. Thursday when they host Sebring at River Greens.

The Avon Park boys match at Lake Wales was rained out.

CROSS COUNTRY: LP Meet Rescheduled

LAKE PLACID - The Lake Placid Invitational has been rescheduled for 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
