BARTOW - Facing tough competition and playing four matches in one day, the Sebring volleyball team proved they could hang with some of the best squads in the state over the weekend at the Bartow Invitational.
The Class 4A Blue Streaks defeated Lake Region in three games, edged Gateway in three games and blasted host Bartow in two games to reach the finals on Saturday.
In the finals, Sebring played well, but lost to Class 6A Osceola by scores of 25-23, 25-23 to finish second in the 10-team tournament.
"I'm really pleased with our performance," said Blue Streak coach Venessa Sinness. "We played as a team and we served and received serve very well.
"Anna West and Molly Blackman did a great job of blocking at the net and set the tone for us by playing aggressive and with emotion."
Sebring is back on the floor at Lake Placid tonight and the Blue Streaks host Avon Park on Thursday.
"I told the girls to rest up on Sunday because we have a big week ahead of us," Sinness said. "Playing so well over the weekend against very good teams gave us a big shot of confidence. "I saw a lot of positives in the tournament and hopefully, that will carry over into this week's matches.
"We want to continue to work to improve so that we're peaking at district tournament time."
