LAKE PLACID - A 1,400-square-foot addition has been approved for NU-HOPE Elder Care Services' building on Main Avenue in Lake Placid.
The Lake Placid Local Planning Agency/Board of Adjustment voted 4-0 for a special exception for NU-HOPE regarding parking on Hibiscus Avenue during its meeting last week.
The addition will be used by employees to sort and price donations for the merchandise portion of the store. NU-HOPE is currently using a trailer for storage, sorting and pricing.
The town owns the trailer. The Lake Placid Police Department operated from there several years ago.
"The doublewide there is unsafe," said Sandy Foster, executive director of NU-HOPE.
Foster said he hopes the work can begin as soon as possible and added that he would like to have it finished in early 2009.
The exact cost of the project is not known, Foster said, because a lot of the work is going to be done in-kind. Ron Handley of Homes by Handley Inc. will be the contractor.
The LPA is requiring NU-HOPE to have parking spaces on Hibiscus, which is on the north side of the building, to be paved on or before a certificate of occupancy is issued.
