Lancers Get Past Panthers

AVON PARK - Kysi Wooden was a dominant force when she was a standout for Avon Park, and the Red Devil almunus came into her own at the college level on Thursday.

Wooden led the team with 10 kills, 12 digs, three solo blocks and five block assists to earn praises from her coach, but it wasn't enough as the South Florida Community College Panthers were defeated by Manatee 15-25,17-25, 25-14, 17-25 in a Suncoast Conference match-up.

"Kysi stole my heart tonight," said SFCC head coach Kim Crawford. "She was enthused and played with passion tonight. She's overcome the injuries that hobbled her last season and has really come on for me."

Wooden's play aside, Crawford wasn't pleased with the play of her Panther squad, which drops to 1-11 overall and 0-3 in the conference.

"It really boggles my mind," Crawford said. "We have the talent, but it seems we refuse to play together as a team. Sometimes I can't believe what I'm seeing on the court.

"We shouldn't have lost to Manatee."

The Panthers came out strong, taking a commanding 8-1 lead but the wheels fell off the train, as the Lancers rallied to take a 9-8 lead and cruised to an eight-point win.

SFCC is back in action on Tuesday when they travel to face conference foe St. Petersburg. The Panthers next home game is Sept. 27 when they host Warner Southern.
