Play Ball

Published: September 18, 2008

Soon the cry "Play ball" will echo through Lake June ball field in Lake Placid, ushering in the second season of Miracle League play. I am writing this letter as an open invitation to all readers to join us for the upcoming season.

Miracle League is a baseball league for individuals with cognitive or physical disabilities. For some of our athletes, last year's inaugural season was the first chance they had to play organized sports. We had over 70 athletes and over 100 "buddies," which far exceeded our expectations. Our athletes ranged from ages 3 to 65, and came from all over Highlands County as well as four nearby counties.

The response by volunteers to act as buddies, called "Angels in the Outfield," was strong last year and we hope for another great buddy turn out. This year we are also launching a "Fans in the Stands" campaign in an effort to get people to come out and cheer on our teams.

If you've never joined us for a Miracle League game, I invite you to come see an exceptional display of determination and caring as our players work hard to realize their potential through sports!

Miracle League orientation and "fun day" for all athletes, buddies, and coaches is Saturday, Sept. 27 at 9 a.m. at the Lake June ball fields in Lake Placid. For more information, please contact us by e-mail at buddyregistration@miracleleagueoflakeplacid.com or call Adela Casey at 863-441-0226.
