LAKE WALES - Cara Worth took first in the 50-meter freestyle and Brittany Murphy took second in the 100-frees, while both swimmers were key members of the gold medal 200- freestyle relay squad, as Avon Park was impressive in a tri-meet against Frostproof and Hardee at the Lake Wales YMCA pool on Tuesday.
The Red Devil swimmers competed in a meter pool for the first time this season, which made for slower times.
The AP boys finished tied for second with Frostproof and the girls came in second with Hardee taking first overall.
"I'm proud of the team's progress so far," said AP swim coach Michael Schofield. "They're making great gains with each and every meet."
Worth took first in the 50-free with a time of 36.12, while teammate Selina Olguin placed fifth with a time of 38.96, while Murphy took second in the 100-free with a time of 1:14.21.
Worth and Murphy, along with relay teammates Jamie Wirries and Autumn Roberts took first in the 200-meter freestyle relay with a time of 2:25.71.
Murphy also placed third in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:39.63.
Roberts was impressive in the tri-meet, as she took second in the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 3:22.74 and was a member, along with Ashley Cooper, Jenna Tomblin and Ogluin, of the grueling 400-meter freestyle relay team that placed second with a time of 6:07.15.
Raeleigh Miller swam the 100-meter butterfly in the time of 1:51.57 for a second place finish and also walked away with silver in the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 3:37.94, while Wirries placed fourth with a time of 4:02.00.
Wirres was the lone girls diver but still finished with a respectable 129.65 points.
On the boys side, Kyle Jahna placed second in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:40.88, while teammate John Chittum came in fourth with a time of 1:52.04.
Chittum had a pair of third place finishes in the diving, where he compiled 163.25 points and finished with a time of 31.40 in the 50-meter freestyle for the Red Devils.
AP diver Pablo Pantoja came in fourth with 152 points.
"Our divers performed much better this week," said AP dive coach Shane Wirries. "We've been working on some new dives and I think we'll keep improving as the season progresses.
Drew Sedlock came in first in the 500-meter freestyle with a time of 7:49.56 and third in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 1:10.46, while anchoring the 200-meter freestyle relay team that included Nolan Jahan, Tyler King and Pantoja to a first place finish with a time of 2:06.26.
The Red Devils are back in the pool on Thursday when they travel to face Hardee at 5:30 p.m.
