Reference Darrel Johnston's Aug. 29 letter "Typical Politics." To paraphrase him: "When a candidate runs for the most important office in the world, and has nothing to offer in the way of experience, he will not and should not prevail."
Two of our most effective presidents, Kennedy and Clinton, were both younger than Barrack and had similar experience when elected. I respect John McCain's outstanding service to our country, but unfortunately experience doesn't guarantee an effective president. Good judgment does. McCain has been lacking that type of judgment in his quest for the presidency.
McCain has supported Bush over 90 percent of the time, and we can't afford a president who is effective less than 10 percent of the time. McCain has indicated we might have troops in Iraq for up to 100 years. McCain has stated he would follow Bin Laden to the "gates of hell and bring him back dead or alive." John, instead of voting to start an unprovoked war with Iraq and your vast military expertise, it seems logical that you would go to Afghanistan where he was located and then you wouldn't have to go to the "gates of hell" to get him. These are not the types of judgments an effective president would make.
Prior to the Bush administration we were the most influential and respected nation in the world. Unfortunately Bush enacted his cowboy diplomacy whereby it was his way or the highway, thus we were unable to form an adequate coalition of troops from other major nations. We are now fighting wars in two countries. Our troops have been depleted and they are stressed out with three or four rotations to Iraq.
McCain freely admitted his lack of adequate economic knowledge, thus we will suffer through four more years of disastrous Bush policies if McCain is elected. We are spending $10 billion a month on the Iraq war.
Bush inherited a record budget surplus from Clinton and leaves with a record deficit greater than all previous 42 presidents combined. Apparently Bush has a no limit credit card of taxpayer's money, as the total national debt stands at over $900 trillion.
It's imperative that we elect a Democratic president and Congress. Please join me and cast your vote on Nov. 4.
