LAKE PLACID - A Lake Placid man remained in Highlands County Jail in lieu of $110,500 bond Monday after he was arrested Friday night and charged in connection with a drive-by shooting in Highway Park Sept. 7.

Elbert McFarlane Heron, 28, of 130 Zion St., was booked on charges of attempted second-degree murder, firing a weapon or discharging a firearm in public, firing a deadly missile into an occupied dwelling, vehicle or building and firing a deadly missile into an occupied vehicle.

Sheriff's deputies were called to 114 Anderson St., in Lake Placid, in reference to the drive-by shooting. On arrival, police found a vehicle parked in the front yard of the residence with a two-month old baby, according to the arrest report.

One of the shots fired that night hit the vehicle with the baby in it. But the child was not hurt. Actually, no one was injured that night.

The victims told investigators they saw Heron fire in their direction. Two of the victims dropped to the ground when they heard "rapid fire."

One of the rounds struck the residence, the report stated. Two other rounds struck another parked vehicle.

Deputies recovered eight spent shell casings from the area.

Heron reportedly told a witness that he was approached by another male about a problem he was having with one of the victims. He said he went to someone's house and they pulled a gun on him and they tried to cock it.

He reportedly told the witness he went to his car and pulled out his AK-47, put a clip in it and started shooting.
