Poetry, Sculpture Count As Art

SEBRING - Here's the deal, says Jeri Wohl. Buy a chair for $100. Then paint it yourself, or get an artist to do it.

Then the chair will be one of 100 placed at the Highlands Arts League's newly renovated Visual Art Center, overlooking Lake Jackson.

"We hope to raise $10,000 for operating funds," said Wohl.

The folding chairs will be used during future art classes.

Artists have already gotten two chances to paint, once during a Labor Day paint-in, and once on Saturday. Several primed but unpainted chairs remain. The Arts League furnishes the chair, paint and brushes.

On Saturday, Jake Cruz, 4, and his mom, Angela Siebert, and Sydney Crumley, 6, and her aunt, Rhonda Barnes, all of Sebring, furnished the artistic talent.

"I need more red," Sydney said, and her dad, Steve Crumley, pushed over a paper plate of paint. Together, all five comprise Steve and Company, which sells women's fashions and accessories on the traffic circle.

Businesses and individuals can sign their chairs, Wohl said, like Reynolds' Farms, Coldwell Banker American Southern Realty, and Heartland Real Estate Co.

Wohl's favorite chair: one for her daughter, Casey, who advertised her book, "Girls Getaway Guide," which the Sebring woman is writing for Orlando and other cities.
