In response to Millie Grime's letter (Highlands Today Sept. 11) regarding the contributions to Mr. Grimming's campaign, I wish to share information regarding those contributions.
First of all, if you check the records, Mr. Grimming has not received any contributions from Michigan. He has received contributions from Illinois. This is due to family support and the respect he earned from colleagues during his years with the Illinois State Police. During his tenure he rose through the ranks from a patrolman to become deputy director.
After serving with the Illinois State Police, Mr. Grimming became the director of the Florida Highway Patrol. In this position he served all areas of the state of Florida, including Miami. After Sept. 11, Mr. Grimming moved on to become the director of Homeland Security at Miami-Dade College. Yes, there were contributions from this area of the state, but not due to a "hidden agenda." The contributions came as a result of a belief in his integrity, experience and ability.
I hope Ms. Grime takes the time to attend a candidate forum, meet Ron Grimming and understand that his contributions come in small amounts from a wide range of citizens; the vast majority of whom reside in Highlands County. In fact, there were so many small contributions that the last time Highlands Today reported on them, the paper advised readers to go to Highlandstoday.com for a complete list, rather than use the space needed to print the contributors and amounts.
