John Carroll Holds Off Lake Placid

Published: September 7, 2008

FORT PIERCE - - A physical defense and a punishing running game paced John Carroll past Lake Placid by a score of 14-0 on Friday night at McGuire Stadium.

The stingy Rams defense, led by outside linebacker Jeremy Taylor, smothered the Green Dragon attack, allowing only 134 yards of total offense.

Despite the season-opening setback, first-year Lake Placid coach Jason Holden saw some improvement on both sides of the ball.

"Our tackling was a lot better than last week, but we still have room for improvement," the Green Dragon skipper said. "We also ran to the football better on defense and hit the hole better on offense.

"We're still far from where we need to be, but we're going to keep working hard to get better."

John Carroll got on the scoreboard when quarterback Justin Osking hooked up with wide receiver Josh Giovengo for a 35-yard touchdown pass down the right sideline.

The point after gave the Rams a 7-0 lead with 3:11 remaining in the first period.

Osking completed 10-of-21 passes for 106 yards.

"Justin played very well for making his first varsity start," said John Carroll coach Chris Rock. "He put the ball where he needed to put it, we just didn't make the catches."

Rams tailback Greg Buderus, who had a game-high 134 rushing yards on 19 carries, scored on a 4-yard run with just 16 seconds remaining in the first half for a 14-0 lead.

Lake Placid, which was led by senior tailback Chevontray Wilson's 68 rushing yards on 15 carries, had several promising drives stall in the second half under the relentless pressure of the John Carroll defense.

Green Dragon quarterback Zach Campbell rushed for 15 yards and completed 4-of-9 passes for 14 yards with one interception.

"You can't go from zero to one hundred in a week," said Holden. "The kids are playing hard and we're going to get better.

"We've just got to hang in there and keep working hard."

Lake Placid hosts Celebration next Friday in their home opener.
