Sebring Stays Perfect, Sweeps Palmetto

Published: September 6, 2008

SEBRING - As the setter for the Sebring volleyball team, Britt Augustine always has plenty of options in front of her, behind her and to the side.

That's because the Blue Streaks are loaded with big hitters, and in Thursday night's 25-13, 25-23, 25-20 victory over Palmetto, Sebring's firepower was on full display.

"It takes the pressure off one individual," said Sebring coach Venessa Sinness. "Britt doesn't always feel the pressure of setting just one person, she has five players at any given time who can get a kill."

But on Thursday, it was Augustine who called her own number more often than not, as she tipped on second contact multiple times to lead the Streaks with seven kills, 13 assists and four aces to help keep the Streaks undefeated and a perfect 12-for-12 in games on the season.

"They were up 16-12 late in the second game," Sinness said. "We had a little bit of a breakdown on serve-receive, but we dug the ball well and had seven aces.

"Palmetto will be a team to be reckoned with this season. They've come a long way since last year."

Molly Blackman, Anna West and Abigail Bone added three kills on a night Sebring racked up seven aces and three misses on serves, a stat Sinness called "amazing."

"Broken plays helped us tonight, and we did a good job keeping it in play," Sinness said. "We had quite a few back-row attacks and the girls did a good job with that."

The victory was another tune-up before the biggest early season match of the district season, when Sebring hosts perennial power DeSoto at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

"It will set the tone for the rest of teams in district," Sinness said. "Our biggest thing is that we have to go in and play our game. We've seen them before and we know what they do, we just have to go in, block well, serve well and let it all fall into place."

As important as the match is, Sinness said her team is keeping it in perspective.

"It's the end of season when we want to beat them," she said.
