The season may have just ended for Avon Park girls golf coach Suzie Gentry and her team, but the first-year coach is already excited about what the future has in store.
"To take the girls to regionals was a real treat," said Gentry, who returns five of her eight players next season. "They saw the kind of quality players that are out there in their region and they're ready to go for next year.
"They're already talking about what they're going to do on the Sertoma Tour."
Playing in the program's first ever Class 1A-Region 6 tournament on Tuesday, the Red Devils struggled on the slick greens of The Links at Greenfield Plantation in Bradenton, firing a team score of 455.
Junior Paige Moffat led AP with a 104, while sophomore Sarah Hunnicutt shot a 111, senior Courtney Robinson carded a 109 and sophomore Katelynn Stoll rounded out the scores with a 131.
"The greens were double-cut and extremely slick," Gentry said. "The girls were doing OK off the tee and with their irons, but if you hit the green, it'd run right off, and we're not used to that."
Community School of Naples won the team title with a score of 306, followed by Lemon Bay (370). Medalist honors went to Canterbury senior Michelle Shin, who fired a 65 to lead the field by five strokes.
The shorthanded Sebring girls also struggled to find their games on Tuesday at the Class 2A-Region 3 tournament at The Country Club at Deer Run in Winter Park.
The Blue Streaks finished with a team score of 409 to take seventh out of nine teams on the challenging track.
Junior Camiel White paced Sebring with a 90, followed by senior Priscilla Adams (94), senior Jamie Hershkowitz (105) and freshman Savannah Fischer (120).
Freshman Lindsey Lovett, a regular contributor to the varsity squad this season, was unable to play due to a back injury she suffered just days before the tournament.
Still, first-year Sebring coach Jeff Hendges said he felt good about how the season went.
"The girls are a bit disappointed because they feel like they didn't play at their best," Hendges said. "But I feel good about the season: We made regionals with only a few girls with experience, which was our goal.
"And I learned so much I don't know where to begin. It's a lot harder than I thought it'd be, but it's very rewarding to see people improve and be successful."
Lake Howell won the team title at their home course with a blistering score of 287, led by the top three individual finishers. Senior Carlie Yadloczky won medalist honors with a 69.
