Grimming Is Unknown

Since 99.9 percent of the pro-Ron Grimming for sheriff letters come from Lake Placid, I think the fine folks there ought to elect him as their next police chief and let the rest of us in Highlands County tend to the business of re-electing Susan Benton as sheriff.

We know what we have in Sheriff Benton. She is one of us. She worked her way through the sheriff's department, she has lived in this community for many years, raised her family in this community, buried her husband Jim in this community and in every decision she makes as sheriff, it is with the best interests of this community in mind.

On the other hand, who is Ron Grimming? Him visiting his parents in Lake Placid once a year for 25 years doesn't exactly make him an old friend. He's an outsider; all we know about him comes from quotes from his friends or the local Republican Party headquarters.

If this newspaper actually acted like a newspaper and for one day cut back on its coverage of God, clowns and Sun 'n Lake and checked into his past, we would be more enlightened voters. But, we don't know anything about him really.

More worrisome is that we don't know who he's courting to fund this run for sheriff. Vote for Sheriff Benton, vote for someone we know and can trust.
