BRADENTON - For the first time in school history, both Avon Park golf teams are heading to regionals together.
After the boys team qualified on Monday, the girls team did its part on Tuesday, braving the howling winds at The Links at Greenfield Plantation to shoot a team score of 432 and claim third place at the Class 1A District 16 tournament.
The placing earns the Red Devils ticket to regionals, which will tee off next Tuesday at The Links.
"I'm so proud of the girls," said Avon Park coach Suzie Gentry, who noted the constant wind and water on nearly every hole made the course extremely difficult. "They played very well in tough conditions and I was very pleased with how well they focused."
Senior Courtney Robinson led the charge with a 98, followed by sophomore Sarah Hunnicutt (105), junior Paige Moffat (107) and sophomores Angela Bateman and Kate Lynn Stoll (122).
Cardinal Mooney won the district title with a 402, while Out-Of-Door Academy took second place behind medalist Gagi Balit, who fired a 78.
Lake Placid took sixth place in the eight-team event with a team score of 494. Senior Ashleigh Barben led the way with a 117, followed by Ansley Stewart (118), Jessica Honkala (120) and Nichele Browning (139).
