SEBRING - At least two employees with the Highlands County Clerk of Courts office apparently have received subpoenas on behalf of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, but the reason why is unclear.
Yolanda Carbia, with the regional FDLE office, confirmed that subpoenas were issued.
She wouldn't answer any questions beyond that. When a case is under investigation, or is an open investigation, authorities don't have to tell the public anything.
Mary Wilson, director of compliance and internal audits in the clerk's office, told Highlands Today that she received a subpoena Oct. 1 and answered questions under oath from two FDLE special agents on Oct. 2 in the state attorney's office.
Wilson said the questions pertained to election issues within the clerk's office. She said none of the questions were about her activities, but about what she had heard in the office.
Bob Germaine, senior director of court services, also said he had heard about the subpoenas, but "I don't have a clue what it's all about."
Wilson, a Democrat, and Germaine, a Republican, are running for clerk of courts in the Nov. 4 general election. The winner will replace Clerk of Courts Luke E. Brooker, who is not running for another four-year term.
