BRADENTON - Avon Park running back's Teddy Allen and Virgil Cooper rushed for a combined 189 yards and Albert Moses connected with receiver Alonzo Robertson on a 37-yard touchdown pass with two minutes left in the game, but Braden River held on for the 16-6 win in a Class 3A-District 10 math-up on Friday.
Moses went 6 for 11 for 74 yards passing, but it was the Red Devil ground attack that made fans stand up and take notice.
Braden River led 9-0 at the half. After recovering an Avon Park fumble at midfield, the Pirates marched down the field that ended with a Steven Fischer nine-yard touchdown strike to Sharrod Neasman to go up 6-0.
Avon Park put together a 66-yard drive on the strength of the running of Cooper and Allen, but Braden River's goal line stand held up on fourth-and-goal from the one with six minutes left in the half.
