I have lived in Highlands County for more than 37 years and have watched with enthusiasm and excitement as many friends, co-workers and now our children, have the opportunity to seek quality education in our community.
South Florida Community College has advanced in many more ways than we ever dreamed and the presence of both the past president Dr. Cornelius and the current president Dr. Stephens has brought a great quality of learning and opportunity.
It was with great disappointment that I read a letter to the editor from Mr. Jerry Dejonge spewing disparaging remarks about our sheriff. He is the criminal justice representative for the college, and what is most disturbing is that my son is currently enrolled in the law enforcement academy.
To think that Mr. Dejonge has any influence on our young cadets that will most likely work within our law enforcement community brings great concern. I hope that the college will distance itself from his remarks, as they were at minimum unwise and unwarranted in his position and are certain to cast a dark shadow on the good of the academy.
