FROSTPROOF - Sebring junior speedster Connor Bauer continued his torrid start to the cross country season with a first-place finish in Saturday's Ridge Run 5k in Frostproof.

Bauer breezed to first with a time of 17 minutes, 37 seconds, which was more than 40 seconds faster than runner-up Alex Foss.

"Connor did really well," said Blue Streak assistant coach Pat Cober. "He is in great shape and ran a very controlled race over a hilly course.

"He competed in this race last year and beat his time by almost a minute."

Sebring, which had several runners out taking the SAT test, finished sixth in the 10-team boys meet with 121 points, while Lakeland George Jenkins won with a team score of 57.

Osceola tied for second place with host Frostproof at 80 points, McKeel Academy finished fourth with 90 and Kathleen had 113.

Blue Streak Michael Polatty ran a 21:35, David Ontermaa had a 22:07, Alex Kennedy finished in 22:19 and Donavon White rounded out the team scoring with a 23:25.

Bauer, who qualified for the state meet last season, is determined to get back to the state competition this year, hopefully with the Blue Streak team along for the ride.

"I'm running really well right now," said Bauer. "I hope to get back to state and it would be great if we made it as a team."

The Sebring girls finished sixth with a score of 133 and were led by Amanda Kennedy who ran a 26:42.

Blue Streak Caitlyn Moulds ran a 28:00. while Lisa Ontermaa had a 28:05, and Emily Smith and Melissa Luke rounded out the scoring with a 33:44.

Osceola won the meet with 45 points, George Jenkins placed second with 55, Kathleen came in third at 63 and Bartow finished with 98.

"We didn't have all of our runners, but I'm proud of the girls because they did they best they could," said Cober. "The competition was excellent and this kind of meet will only help us prepare for the district meet."

Sebring is back in action when it hosts the Heartland Invitational on Tuesday at Highlands Hammock State Park.
