Published: November 25, 2008

SEBRING - While crowds jam the big box stores, the malls and big name franchise stores Friday to kick off their holiday shopping, merchants in downtown Sebring hope to attract some shoppers their way and wow them with unique items and local charm.

Betty Perkins, owner of Tosheba Fashions, located at 133 N. Ridgewood Drive, said this will be her first season at her new location. She and her husband, Earnest, had been in business four years on West Center Avenue, but recently moved to North Ridgewood Drive.

"It's slow," Betty Perkins said. "There's no other way to put it. But, there is a little more traffic at this end, so I believe things are going to pick up.

She spent Monday afternoon redecorating her storefront window for a special 30 percent off weekend sale on ladies apparel that starts10 a.m. Friday to 5 p.m., and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. The sale does not include a new line of leather and cloth handbags she just got in, made in Rochester, N.Y.

Rhonda Barnes, owner of Steve & Company, a ladies clothing and accessories store, located at 113 Circle Park Drive, said this is the store's 14th year in business and the Friday after Thanksgiving has always been one of their busiest shopping days.

She's psyched and ready and isn't giving economic conditions a second thought.

"It's gonna be a fun holiday," she said Monday. "Friday will be busy. It has been in the past. We're expecting a big rush on our Brighton charms."

Gene Brenner, owner of Brenner Pottery and Craft Gallery, located at 104 Circle Park Drive, said he will definitely be open for sales of his handcrafted pottery and gifts.

Le Attique is a new downtown store located at 207 Circle Park Drive. Its owners Suzette Rhoades and Kaye Pigman opened the doors just a few months ago, along with moving their other store, Happy Owl, to the downtown at 227 N. Ridgewood Drive.

"I hope that once Thanksgiving is over we'll have a turnout here," said Rhoades. "We hope that the way the economy is going that people will shop close to home, support local businesses."
