LABELLE - Yuridia Terrones completed scored a hat trick and Erica Resendez added two goals on Tuesday to lead the in Lake Placid girls soccer team to a 5-2 victory over LaBelle.
The win improves the Green Dragons to 1-0-1 on the season, after a 4-4 tie to Clewiston to open the season last week.
First-year head coach John Merlo is happy with improvement of his team, especially on the defensive side of the ball so far this season.
"We held the lead against Clewiston and gave it up, so we worked a lot on finishing out games," Merlo said. "Our defense played great tonight and sophomore goalie Sarah Thompson came up huge for us."
Thompson finished with six saves in the win.
Lake Placid is back in action on Friday, when they travel to face Mulberry in a Class 3A-District 8 clash.
BOYS SOCCER: DeSoto 6, Avon Park 1
ARCADIA - The Avon Park boy's soccer team dropped to 0-2 on the season after losing 8-0 to an experienced DeSoto squad in a Class 4A-District 10 match on Tuesday.
The Red Devils are back in action tonight when they host district power Braden River at Joe Franza Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
GIRLS SOCCER: DeSoto 8, Avon Park 0
ARCADIA - The youthful Red Devils continued to improve under first-year girls head coach Jocelyn Simplice, but continued its scoring drought as the DeSoto Bulldogs blanked Avon Park 8-0 in a Class 4A-District 10 match-up on Tuesday.
"We have a lot of new players this year and we're still learning to play together as a team," Simplice said. "It normally takes three years to build a solid program with players dedicated to the sport.
"I'm confident we'll continue to get better as a team."
Avon Park hosts district power Braden River tonight at 6 p.m.
GIRLS BASKETBALL: Okeechobee 61, LP 31
LAKE PLACID - Missed layups cost Lake Placid and Okeechobee took advantage of the mistakes to beat the Green Dragons 61-31 on their home court on Tuesday.
"It all came down to missing a two-foot shot time and time again for us," LP head coach Shonda LaGree said. "That alone killed our offense."
The Green Dragons missed 17 layups against the Brahmans.
Brandi Dolbert scored eight points off the bench in the second half to lead LP in scoring, while freshman Jamacia Gayle pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds in the loss.
Lake Placid is back on the court tonight when they host Walker Academy at 7 p.m.
