In an article in Highlands Today on Veterans Day on Nov. 11, I was asked to do an interview with the paper to represent the veterans who were on Iwo Jima. To me this was quite an honor.
I feel that I was chosen because I was 85 years old or I was one of the few still living who was on Iwo Jima; there aren't many of us left alive. It is still an honor. I want to thank Highlands Today for the very good write up honoring the veterans, covering 37 days on Iwo; makes you feel like you were there again.
I want to thank Brad Dickerson and Jasmina Meyer for an excellent job. I would also like to bring out the fact that my wife felt that she was a representative of all families who stayed home and kept home fires burning while we were overseas, fighting. It would have been a lot harder if we had not had the families back here praying for us; that meant a lot to the men fighting.
