LAKE PLACID - Twenty-one people recently completed a new Coronary Health Improvement Project that was initiated in Lake Placid under the direction of Dr. and Mrs. Antonio Roa.
The five-week program focuses on dietary changes aimed at reversing or completely eliminating diabetes, hypertension, obesity, high cholesterol, atherosclerosis (narrowing of the arteries) and osteoporosis.
Participants are encouraged to eat more whole grains, tubers, legumes, fruits and vegetables; enjoy hearty breakfasts and drink eight glasses of water a day and vary the routine with a twist of lemon and occasional herb teas.
It is recommended there should be less intake of fats and oils, sugars, cholesterol foods, salt and alcohol.
Participants are also encouraged to walk. The group logged a total of 1,628.5 miles during the five-week session.
Dr. Hans Diehl is the founder of the program and is the director of Lifestyle Medicine Institute in California.
There is a lecture series that includes educational programs and lectures presented on video/DVD by Diehl. Before the lectures began, a nutritional sampling of healthy food is served to participants by Nenette Jacobe, a dietician and nutritional coordinator.
A ceremony to mark the completion of the program was held Nov. 9 at the Better Living Community Center in Lake Placid.
Another session is scheduled to begin in February of next year.
