SEBRING - Hosting this year's Sebring Christmas Parade, the Heartland Young Professionals has requested Sebring City Council approval for road closures from 6:30-to-9 p.m. Dec. 5.
In a letter to City Administrator Scott Noethlich, written Nov. 3, Dusty Johnson, representing the young professionals, requested to be included on Tuesday's council agenda that begins at 6:30 p.m.
This year's theme is "Home for the Holidays," Johnson wrote.
"As is customary, we have set aside spots for elected officials and hope that council, staff, and the mayor will participate," he wrote. "We have also met with the police department and filed the proper paperwork for the parade route and road closures."
The parade will run in the opposite direction from what it has run in recent years.
Johnson said Monday that the direction change was because of some construction on Highlands Avenue for the Sebring Parkway Phase II.
He said the parade spots are nearly filled.
"I keep getting more in and we still have a few spots left," he said. "We have to cut it off at 100 participating groups."
The parade staging area will be on the Sebring Parkway between Shontee Avenue and North Ridgewood Drive.
Starting at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, the parade will begin at North Ridgewood Drive and the Sebring Parkway and will run south on North Ridgewood, past the police station, and into the Sebring Circle.
From the Circle the parade will turn right onto South Commerce Avenue and to the intersection of McClain Lane, where participants will turn right and the parade will end.
There will be a mandatory safety meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, at the Sebring Fairgrounds pavilion, at which at least one representative of each participating group must attend.
The young professionals have been given the authority to pull any group out of the parade that is violating the new safety procedures, for example erratic driving.
As a result of a fatal accident involving a child last year in Plant City, no group that is distributing candy to the audience will be allowed to go back to the float to refill their containers. They will be able to pull a little wagon or push a cart from which they can refill.
