AVON PARK Police are investigating an incident that reportedly happened Thursday at Avon Park High School, where a student was shot in the face with an air assault gun.
Avon Park Police Commander Mike Rowan said officers took a delayed report Thursday between 5 and 5:30 p.m., in reference to the incident, which he said took place during school hours.
Rowan said the information he had was that a student had the weapon in a car before giving it to another student, who then allegedly put it up to a third student's face and pulled the trigger.
"The incident is being looked into," Rowan said, adding that no charges have been filed at this point and investigators are hoping to find witnesses who might be able to shed more light on what happened.
No charges have been filed at this time, according to Rowan.
Rodney Hollinger, deputy superintendent with the School Board of Highlands County, was aware of the incident but did not have any specific details.
"I haven't received any report from the school," he said.
Messages left for APHS officials seeking comment were not returned before press time.
