LAKE PLACID - The Highlands County Parks and Recreation Department, in cooperation with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, announces that there will be an aerial application of herbicides on Lake Istokpoga on Nov. 18-19.

The purpose of the application is to control approximately 1,211 acres of topped-out hydrilla present in several areas of the lake.

Recent mapping performed by ReMetrix, Inc. indicate that there is a standing crop of approximately 2000 acres of hydrilla scattered throughout the lake. In addition, also present is expanding native submersed vegetation such as eel grass and Illinois pond weed.

"These native species enhance the lake by providing excellent fish and wildlife habitat," said Vicki Pontius, parks and recreation director.

The locations of the treatments over the two-day period area as follows: 767 acres near Istokpoga Shores, 256 acres near Windy Point Park, 60 acres at Highlands Lake Drive/ Rutledge Road and 128 acres near Henderson's Point.
