EAGLE LAKE - Jamee Hawthorne scored a game-high 12 points and Beonca Godfrey chipped in 10 more on Tuesday to lead the Avon Park girls basketball team to a season-opening 44-15 victory over Lakeland Christian at the Lake Region Tip-Off Classic.

"I thought the girls played well and we were really balanced in our scoring," said AP head coach Paulette Daley. "We just need to work a lot harder on our free throws in practice."

The Red Devils are back on the court against Hardee at 6 p.m. tonight. They then return to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Sebring for a 1:30 p.m. start.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: DeSoto 66, Lake Placid 21

ARCADIA - The youthful Lake Placid girls basketball squad put up a fight, but the senior leadership was too much to handle in a 66-21 defeat to host DeSoto during the Bulldog Preseason Classic on Tuesday.

The Green Dragons played a squad made up of four freshman and four sophomores, and junior Sierra Weaver was the sole starter on the court from last season.

Weaver led Lake Placid with five points, while freshman Shandesia Littman, Kunshe Wilson and Stephanie Smith all had four points each for the Green Dragons.

"We're in the process of filling a lot of holes in the starting lineup," said LP head coach Shonda LeGree. "DeSoto is a senior-laden team and they had a ton of speed that we were no match for."
Lake Placid is back on the court tonight when they face Lemon Bay at 5:30 p.m. The Green Dragons' home opener is set for 7:30 p.m. Monday, when they host LaBelle.
