Sheriff's Race

I am happy and quite frankly relieved regarding the results of the sheriff's race in Highlands County. Such negativity should not have had a place in this election, yet that is what was most definitely portrayed by the Grimming political campaign.

The mud slinging was relentless and in that vein, his message of what he wanted to accomplish as sheriff in Highlands County was obscured by attacks against our Sheriff Benton. It was simply nauseating to be bombarded day by day with radio, mail flyers, and any other method that the Grimming campaign could use, or attempts to cloud perceptions of Sheriff Benton.

Sheriff Benton is the real deal. She is a professional and conducted her campaign in that light, under what I might say was a very difficult environment. She has done so much good for the citizens of Highlands County and with this promise of a new phase under her administration. I can only believe that she will pursue change in the sheriff's office with the same dedication, professionalism and positivity that has been with us for the last four years.

This race should be a lesson learned. Stand on your own merits; stay focused on what you stand for, and what your true purpose is when you desire to become a public servant. In Sheriff Benton we have those ideals and qualities. Congratulations, Sheriff Benton!
