LAKE PLACID A Lake Placid woman is dead following a two-vehicle accident Thursday morning at the northbound intersection of U.S. 27 and Lake Francis Road.
The crash happened at 8:25 a.m. when a 2006 Nissan, driven by Barbara A. Tardiff, crossed the northbound lanes of U.S. 27 from the median crossover and failed to yield to a northbound 2006 Mack dump truck, driven by Timothy S. Hostetler, 42, of Sebring, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The Nissan was originally traveling eastbound on U.S. 27 from Lake Francis Road.
Hostetler had no time to take evasive action once the Nissan crossed and struck the passenger side.
Steve Coltharp, with Highlands County EMS, said the impact caused a "major intrusion" on the side of the car. Tardiff's vehicle became attached to the front of the dump truck as a result of the accident
Tardiff, 56, was originally going to be flown by Aeromed to Tampa General Hospital. As her condition deteriorated, she was taken instead to Highlands Regional Medical Center, Coltharp said.
FHP Trooper Patrick J. Roberts was the investigating officer.
