AP High School Teacher Suspended

AVON PARK - An Avon Park High School social studies teacher is under suspension without pay for a matter that is being reviewed by the Florida Department of Education.
The School Board of Highlands County approved a one week suspension without pay for Terry McCormick. His suspension is effective from Oct. 28 through Nov. 3.
"We have confirmation that they have accepted it as a case," Deputy Superintendent Rodney Hollinger said. So now the district is awaiting the results of the investigation by the Professional Practices Services Bureau of the FDOE.
During an active investigation, the school district and the FDOE releases no information related to the suspension, including what prompted it.
McCormick, 62, was hired by the school district on Aug. 31, 2000.
Also, the district continues to wait for the results of the Professional Practices Service's investigation of another Avon Park High School teacher - John Altic.
The 63-year-old science teacher was suspended without pay for one week (May 21-27) for an incident that occurred on May 16 at the high school.
Altic has worked for the Highlands County School District since Aug. 13, 2007.
Investigations at the state level can take months, according to district Human Resources Director Vivianne Waldron.
If Professional Practices Services (PPS) finds "probable cause" the case is turned over to the Educational Practices Commission, which conducts its own review and investigation, she said. The Educational Practices Commission then schedules a meeting with the state education commissioner to discuss a final outcome.
Sometimes if PPS does not find "probable cause" a letter will be sent to the district and the person who was under investigation, Waldron said. The letter to the individual will point out ethics and principles of professional conduct.
