High Cost?

Published: May 31, 2008

I read a lot of letters of complaints about the cost of everything, but see no solutions.

First, I would like to comment on "Our Opinion" printed May 25. There is one paragraph that needs to change one letter. "Someone who knows a little politics and how Washington works is U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson." I would like to drop the a.

Here are my answers-questions: Why are we not drilling in the Gulf and other locations? Why are we not building coal to oil plants? Why are not converting slate to oil? Why do we still have a 53 cents a gallon on imported ethanol?

Are oil companies making excess profits? If you sold something for $1 and made 2 cents, would that not be a fair profit? If you sold the same product for $4 and made 8 cents, you would be making four times as much from the same amount of goods!

Why don't we build nuclear plants and oil refineries? Because the government has made it too expensive to get the permits to build them!

We must have a value added tax so we can compete with other countries. Everyone wants lower taxes. If we lower taxes, how will we pay teachers to educate our children?

When is the government going to listen?
