I recently read an article in the Highlands Today about the Sebring Sports Complex. In the article it was mentioned that they were taking donations to do a memorial in honor of John Grill, but the complex manager was unclear on what they should do to honor Mr. Grill.
In my opinion we should honor him in the best way we can: name the complex after him. The complex should become "John Grill Memorial Softball Complex." There is no other person who deserves the honor like he does.
Sebring would not have a sports complex or even an adult softball league if it weren't for John. He pushed for many years to get an organized adult sports league here in the county. He was on the recreational committee board (and I'm sure many others) and went to all the meetings and he was determined to succeed in bringing us the adult sports complex. He was our No. 1 supporter!
Because of John Grill, we now have a state of the art sports complex. Don't get me wrong, many other people were a part of this complex as well, but John was our voice. He made things happen for us. I had my up's and down's with John over the years, but I never took for granted what he did for the adult sporting community. For all he has done, I feel that we should push to honor him in this most meaningful and well deserved way.
It is unfortunate that John has not been honored before now. Although he is not with us physically, he will always be with our softball community spiritually. I hope that someone at the county who knew John and what he did for Highlands County softball will help and do everything possible to give John Grill the honor he deserves.
