AVON PARK — Police were still investigating Wednesday the circumstances surrounding the death of an Avon Park man after a motorcycle wreck at the intersection of East Hal McRae Boulevard and South Carolina Avenue on Sunday.
The crash happened shortly after 8 p.m., according to police.
Vandy Hawk Jr., 39, died as the result of head trauma, said Avon Park Police Det. Dan Burke, who added that the motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet.
Burke said he was at the scene taking photographs the night of the crash and could not release much information as far as direction of travel.
Burke did say one driver was headed east on East Hal McRae Boulevard and the other driver was traveling south on South Carolina Avenue.
The second vehicle, a sport utility vehicle, was driven by Delbra Perry, 44, of Avon Park.
Due to privacy concerns, police would not say if Perry was injured or if she was carrying any passengers.
"This was a real tragedy, not only for him but for his family and the other driver," said Police Chief Matthew Doughney.
Because it has its own traffic homicide investigators, the Avon Park Police Department works its own investigations.
The Florida Highway Patrol has investigated four additional fatal motorcycle crashes so far this year in Highlands County, including one fatality on a four-wheeler.
