PLANT CITY –– Alexis Farnella hit a two-run single in the sixth and Jaclyn Traina pitched seven strong innings as Naples beat Pembroke Pines Charter 5-2 to win the Class 4A state title Saturday.
The win gives Naples (28-3) a state-best tenth title.
With the gamed tied 2-all entering the sixth, the Eagles loaded the bases with one out after a single and two hit batters. Ragan Ball drove in a run with a fielder's choice and Farnella followed with a single off Lauren Sewell (15-1) to make it 5-2.
Traina (21-3) did the rest. She retired the side in order in the sixth and seventh innings, and ended the game with her tenth strikeout.
Pembroke Pines Charter (30-1) was trying to claim its first state championship, complete an unbeaten season and win a national title.
The Jaguars — who also were state runners-up in 2004 and 2005 — had allowed only 13 runs in their first 30 games and three during the postseason.
