SEBRING — The U.S. Senate Chaplain will speak at South Florida Community College's Auditorium, Saturday, at 4:30 p.m. The public is invited and there is no charge.
Barry Black is the 62nd Senate chaplain. He served in the U.S. Navy for 27 years, most recently as a Rear Admiral.
The Baltimore native will be the first speaker for Florida Hospital's fledgling program, "Called to Community."
Richard Barron, the hospital's executive director of mission and ministries, first met Black when he was a college student and before Black served as a missionary.
"We're not here as just a hospital, but also as a steward to the community," said Barron, about the speaker program. "We want to help people relate to us and the hospital."
Barron described Black as an all-around student who loves athletics, especially running.
According to Barron, Black has a photographic memory and enjoys reciting Martin Luther King speeches verbatim.
Religion played a major role in the chaplain's life.
"His mother always kept the family close to God," said Barron. "Barry is into the Bible – you can tell by his preaching."
The free event will also feature singing and a praise band.
Reservations are not required. For more information, call Florida Hospital at 386-6380.
