This letter is in regards to organ donating. My granddaughter died on Nov. 13, 2007. She was only 3 months old. She died under very tragic circumstances. My daughter was faced with having to make a very important decision in her darkest hour. She decided to donate her baby's organs.
It was not until we received a letter from the families of the babies that were saved that I realized how important this decision would be. The baby that received Lexi's heart was within seven days of losing her life. The family was beyond grateful. Their baby was facing the same fate as our precious baby, but thanks to my daughter's selfless act, this family would be spared the devastation, that ours was not.
Another baby received Lexi's lungs, and without this, would have not survived much longer. Again, the family could not be more grateful.
A third baby received her liver, intestines and pancreas. This baby had never left the hospital since it was born, and now because of this gift was going home for the first time in a year. The family was looking forward to having their first Christmas at home with their beautiful baby. Out of something so tragic came a miracle of life for three babies that we did not even know.
I feel like a part of my granddaughter lives on in those three babies. Although our agony and grief continue from this terrible tragedy, somehow there is some healing in knowing that three lives were given back that day. Please consider being a donor. It is one of the most important decisions you will ever make.
