SEBRING — A Sebring man remained in Highlands County Jail in lieu of $7,000 bail Tuesday, after being taken into custody from the Florida Department of Corrections in connection with a Jan. 28, 2007 alleged forged check theft from Amscot.
Americo "Junior" Paniccia, 31, of Sebring, was charged with petty theft and passing a forged or altered instrument.
On Jan. 28, 2007, a fraudulent check was passed at the Sebring Amscot store for $272. The owner of the check told investigators that he lost the check at a local bar during the month of January.
When he reviewed his bank account information, he noticed the fraudulent transaction and notified the Highlands County Sheriff's Office.
The victim told investigators that he did not know Paniccia. Paniccia told investigators contradicting statements about who he got the check from and that he "should have known it was false," the report stated.
